Untucked Woman: Erica Tighe
Erica, what keeps you on the go?
The thing that I love most about my job as owner of Be A Heart is that most days bring new projects. I get to do a lot of things that I’ve never done before, which keeps me learning and growing and very very busy. One moment I’m sitting at my computer laying out a book for a client and the next moment I’m at a high profile event painting wooden signs. There is a lot of juggling and prioritizing and to be honest, me wondering how it is all going to get done!
What's your day-in-the-life?
I usually wake up around 7, make coffee in my percolator and sit on my couch for a morning prayer time. Once I feel centered and stable, I go into my home office and get to work. I start with emails and then start whatever client project is up for the day. Around 9, I run to yoga class to get my exercise in. I come home and shower and get dressed for the day and can get back to my desk around 11. I once again go back to my emails, field anything that came in while I was gone and then hopefully get back to my work. Around 3, I will pack up any orders that have come in and pop them over to the post office. I will usually stop working around 7 or 8 depending on evening activities. Sometimes I will cook dinner and eat with my roommate and who am I kidding? A lot of times I will work from 9 to 12 if there are deadlines or there were a lot of distractions in the day.
What's your favorite piece to wear for work?
My favorite thing to wear are overalls. I love throwing them on with a t-shirt or sweater. Lately I’ve been doing a lot of boyfriend jeans paired with button downs and a chunky sweater over it for these cold(ish) winter days.
What's one of the biggest challenges about your job?
My biggest challenge is emailing. I get so many inquiries and I have such a hard time keeping up with the replies. I’ve been trying to get better at it, but have been failing recently. I think a lot of people have this issue though, so in my actual work. I would say the surprises that come in. Most days that I plan out, never actually happen the way I think they will. A phone call comes in and someone needs something that I hadn’t planned on doing that day. So it requires a lot of flexibility and juggling.
What's one of the most rewarding parts about your job?
Seeing the joy on my clients faces or the customers who buy the products. Of course I love seeing an engaged couple receive their wedding invitations - I think it’s a moment where they realize they are actually getting married. Recently I showed my cousin the baby shower invitation I made for the party we are throwing her and I watched her say “oh my gosh, this is so beautiful.” And then she got quiet and she put her hand on her heart and said, “this just made it so real, I’m going to have a baby.” I also recently designed a planner for a company, Blessed Is She. We didn’t know how many would sell or if it was something people even wanted. I poured myself into the design of the planner, trying to figure out how to include all the things that our focus group wanted. I get tears in my eyes as I see people gush about their love for the planner on social media. They say how much it has blessed their lives and how it has given them more time to spend with their families, or feel organized, or whatever it is. I really take those affirmations/confirmations to heart.
What does an Untucked life mean to you?
For me, an untucked life is getting into the nitty gritty, getting my knees dirty from actually doing the work. It means being approachable and transparent.
From your experience, what can we learn today?
Show up. People always ask me how I got to where I am and I always say I show up even when there isn’t work. In the beginning nobody knew who I was and there wasn’t a steady stream of work flowing in as there is now. But every day I would sit at my desk and work. In the same idea, I also like to say show up as you are. We are all human, some days are better than others, so bring your full self to your work even when you want to hide it from the world.
